Back-rank weakness

A back-rank weakness occurs when the king has little or no way to leave its home rank. White's back rank is the first rank, and Black's is the eighth. The king's own pawns often form a wall in front of it while an enemy rook or queen may enter along the rank.

A check is an attack on the king that must be answered immediately. If a rook or queen checks along the back rank and the king cannot escape, capture the attacker, or block the line, the result is checkmate. The weakness exists before mate, however: a defending rook may be tied to guarding the rank, and a short forcing sequence elsewhere may work because that rook cannot leave.

Typical conditions

• The king is boxed in by its own pawns or pieces.
• It has no legal flight square away from the rank.
• An enemy rook or queen can check through an open file or rank.
• The defenders cannot capture the checking piece or interpose another piece.

Possible remedies include creating luft, the German word for air and a chess term for escape space usually made by a pawn move; controlling the entry square; trading heavy pieces, meaning rooks and queens; or keeping enough defense. Each remedy has a cost. A pawn move may weaken the pawn shield, while a piece assigned to guard duty may become passive.

The weakness can also provide the attacker with a resource, meaning a concrete possibility that changes the position's evaluation. Before accepting a capture or moving a rook, check whether the opponent gains a decisive back-rank check.
