Explanation

Petrov's Defense begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6. White attacks Black's e5-pawn, and Black answers by attacking White's e4-pawn. Rather than defend passively, Black creates a counterattack, an immediate threat against an equivalent central target.

White already pressures

After 2.Nf3, Black must decide whether to protect the attacked pawn or create an equivalent threat.

The position looks symmetrical, but copying moves blindly is dangerous. After 3.Nxe5, the main response is 3...d6, which makes the white knight decide where to retreat, and only then does Black usually recapture on e4. The immediate 3...Nxe4 preserves visual symmetry but allows favorable tactics for White.

After 3.Nxe5, move order matters

Black can play 3... first. Capturing immediately on preserves the symmetrical shape but gives White an active response.

Many lines exchange central pawns and produce a balanced pawn structure, meaning the pawns are arranged without an obvious one-sided weakness. This explains the Petrov's solid reputation. Solid does not mean an automatic draw: both players still choose how to develop, use open files, and break the symmetry.

With 3.Nc3, White develops the other knight. If Black replies ...Nc6, the game transposes into the . The Petrov also sidesteps many branches of the because Black has not played 2...Nc6.

Usage and context

The opening is named after the nineteenth-century Russian master Alexander Petrov, which explains the alternative name Russian Game.

Common confusions

Symmetry means a draw

The starting shape is symmetrical, but White moved first and every exchange changes the timing. The Petrov can be balanced without being a forced draw.
