Centre, activity and resistance

Botvinnik has White. The initial problem will be to support a broad centre without losing coordination. Later, the same struggle for activity will return in the defence of an ending a pawn down.

Explanation

On 7 October 1962, and met on first board in the Soviet Union’s match against the United States, in the penultimate round of Final A at the . It was their only over-the-board encounter. They were not playing for the world title, but for their teams’ points: a game without a winner still had competitive consequences.

Fischer reached an ending a pawn up after dismantling White’s centre. The pieces’ roles kept changing: first supporting an advanced wedge of pawns, then preserving threats from active squares, and finally preventing Black’s majority from advancing unopposed. The draw did not emerge from a position that had always been balanced, or from a struggle that faded away with the queen exchange.

What distinguishes the defence is what Botvinnik accepted losing. He did not try to preserve his queenside intact: he allowed two connected passed pawns in return for keeping the rook active and attacking on the other side. He then managed to break up that pair. The surprising idea did not finish the job. He still had to coordinate king and rook against widely separated pawns without abandoning his own counterplay.

A night’s work and a longer debate

The game was adjourned with Black’s reply sealed. According to Botvinnik’s account, Efim Geller found the defensive idea during the overnight analysis. That credit matters: Botvinnik secured the half-point at the board, but his preparation for the resumption involved collaboration.

The draw did not end the controversy. Fischer annotated the encounter in and argued for winning chances in a continuation that was not played. The documentation assembled by Douglas Griffin records Botvinnik’s replies and later analyses supporting the defence, including a study by Anatoly Kremenetsky published in 1977.

These are not two versions of the result: the score ended in a draw. The dispute concerned what might have happened in hypothetical positions. That distinction gives this encounter a second life: saving half a point and demonstrating why it could be saved proved to be different tasks.
