Explanation
In , c5 means column c and row 5. The Open Sicilian arises after Black answers the advance of White's pawn in front of the king with c5. White moves the g1-knight to f3 and plays d4. When Black's c-pawn captures on d4, a white knight usually recaptures. The exchange opens columns and diagonals so the pieces can act more freely.
This trade creates a lasting difference between the sides. White exchanges the d-pawn for a flank pawn and usually receives active pieces, central control, and attacking chances. Black keeps the d-pawn and e-pawn and clears the c-column. Chess calls it a semi-open file for Black: there is no black pawn on that column, but a white pawn remains and may become a target.

The Sicilian breaks symmetry with Black's first reply.
How to recognize it
- Black plays c5 against the opening advance of White's pawn in front of the king.
- White brings out the g1-knight and advances the d-pawn to d4 early.
- Black's c-pawn captures on d4 and a white knight recaptures.
Many different systems grow from this structure. Some are positional, with plans that improve the pieces gradually; others are tactical, where checks, captures, and concrete threats demand immediate attention. Open Sicilian names a family, not one complete sequence that both players must follow.

View termWhat open means
It does not mean that every pawn disappears. It means that the early exchange on d4 opens central lines and creates more direct piece play.
