Explanation

A pawn shield is the group of pawns protecting a king, usually after , the special move involving the king and a rook. Demolishing it means provoking captures, advances, or sacrifices that separate those pawns, remove them, or force them away from defensive squares. The aim is not simply to win pawns, but to open vertical files, horizontal ranks, or diagonals toward the king.

The break can begin with a pawn advance that forces an exchange, the capture of a protecting pawn, or the offer of a piece. A bishop, for example, may be sacrificed for a pawn near the king when the queen and other pieces are ready to enter. A or can also work if it removes the crucial defender and leaves a forced continuation, a series of moves the opponent cannot avoid without allowing the intended result.

Broken cover often produces an with fewer pawns and pieces protecting it, but that does not guarantee a successful attack. The attacker must check which lines open, which pieces can use them, and whether the defender can exchange attackers, close the position, or escape. Demolition without enough supporting pieces may simply lose material.
