A practical measure of how much a piece contributes through control, threats, defense, coordination, and access to targets.

Explanation

Piece activity describes how much useful work each piece performs in the current position. An active piece controls relevant squares, attacks or defends targets, and restricts the opponent. It may also support a pawn break, an advance or capture that changes the pawn arrangement and opens routes, or reach the important sector quickly.

Activity depends on function, not location alone. A rook on an open file, a vertical line without pawns, is active if it threatens entry or attacks a pawn, but it may be misplaced if the file leads nowhere. A centralized knight can be powerful when it cannot be driven away, while an advanced but unsupported knight may become trapped.

Activity is also collective. Coordinated pieces can create threats that none could produce alone. That coordination may temporarily compensate for a material deficit, meaning fewer pawns or pieces, but the compensation must generate threats, recover material, or become a lasting positional gain before it fades.

A simple way to evaluate it

  • Identify your worst-placed piece and ask what useful job it could perform.
  • Check whether your pieces attack and defend the same points in a coordinated way.
  • Separate available moves from useful moves: that distinction separates activity from .
  • Notice whether a piece is tied to passive defense or can improve without abandoning something essential.

Common confusions

Activity versus aggression

An active piece does not have to attack the king. It may efficiently stop an enemy pawn advancing toward the last rank, secure a key square, or defend several points.

Activity versus mobility

Mobility measures movement options. Activity measures whether the piece usefully influences what matters in the position.
