Regrouping

A regrouping is a sequence that changes the arrangement of an army without seeking an immediate material gain, meaning the capture of pieces or pawns. A piece may leave an apparently active square to reach a more useful one, two rooks may be aligned on the same file, a vertical board line, or several pieces may exchange roles to concentrate on a new area.

The idea often begins with a problem piece, a piece whose placement or role obstructs the plan, or with an objective that the current setup cannot reach. Imagine the desired final arrangement first, then build a legal and safe route toward it. Starting from the destination prevents purposeless piece shuffling.

Regroupings consume tempi, meaning moves that the opponent can also use. They are most reliable when the position is stable, the center cannot open immediately, and the opponent has no urgent threat. A strategic retreat may be the first step, but regrouping describes the complete coordinated rearrangement.
