Explanation
Result notation records the outcome of a game without stating how it happened. 1-0 means White won, 0-1 means Black won, and ½-½ means a draw. In ASCII text and PGN, the draw is normally written 1/2-1/2.
also uses the * character. The asterisk means that the game is still in progress, was abandoned, or has an unknown result. It is not another way to record a draw.
The marker appears after the final move. A PGN also stores it in the Result header, and the two values must agree. The marker alone does not say whether the game ended by checkmate, resignation, time expiration, or an arbiter's decision; that reason requires separate information.
Outcome is not evaluation
The in analysis says that a position appears balanced. It does not declare a drawn result. Likewise, a checkmate sign describes a move or position, while 1-0 or 0-1 records the official outcome.
Common confusions
= versus ½-½
= evaluates a position; ½-½ records the result of a completed game.
1-0 versus checkmate
1-0 only says White won. The game may have ended by mate, resignation, time, or another ruling.
