Balestra mate

A queen-and-bishop pattern in which the queen closes the exits and the bishop attacks the king with no legal reply.

Explanation

Balestra mate displays a clear division of labor between queen and bishop. The queen controls most of the squares available to the king, while the bishop enters on a diagonal and gives the final attack. It is checkmate when the king is under attack and no legal reply can end that attack. The king is often on the edge of the board, where fewer squares are available.

The queen does not need to give check. Its main task is to build a net by controlling nearby escape squares and preventing the king from moving away from the bishop's attack. The bishop then uses an open diagonal to check the king. When the queen covers every escape square without help from defending pieces that block their own king, the bishop must be the checking piece.

The - diagonal carries the bishop's check to the king.
One check and three sealed exits

The roles are distinct: the bishop gives check and the queen builds the net around the king.

How to recognize it

  • The king is near an edge and has limited space.
  • The attacking queen controls escape squares but may not attack the king.
  • A bishop can arrive with check on a diagonal that cannot be blocked or captured.
  • The final position depends on coordination, not one mandatory square.

The most common confusion is . There the queen checks from beside the king and the bishop protects the queen. In Balestra mate the roles are reversed: the queen confines and the bishop mates.

Common confusions

Damiano's bishop mate

In Damiano's pattern, the queen mates and the bishop protects it. In Balestra, the bishop mates and the queen builds the net.

Boden's mate

Boden's mate uses two crossing bishops. Balestra replaces one of those roles with the queen.
