Explanation

A decoy is a move that induces or forces an enemy piece onto a particular square. A friendly piece is often offered for capture. The point of the offer is not the initial capture itself, but to place the capturing piece where it can be attacked, obstruct its own army, or allow a greater threat.

The decoy is usually the first part of a connected sequence of moves. After the piece is drawn in, a , one piece attacking two or more targets, an attack on the king, or a , a coordinated restriction of the king's escape routes, may appear. You therefore have to calculate beyond the offered capture and examine what changes on the destination square.

The boundary between , , and decoy is not universal. A practical distinction is one of emphasis: decoy highlights the bait and destination; deflection highlights the duty the defender abandons; attraction highlights drawing a piece, often the king, to a bad square.

Common confusions

Decoy, deflection, and attraction

Different sources may apply all three labels to the same sequence. Decoy stresses the bait and destination, deflection the abandoned duty, and attraction the forced move to an unfavorable square.
