Explanation
Template theory explains how an expert can remember and handle chess positions containing a great deal of information. An earlier account emphasized chunks, familiar groups of pieces and relationships that memory treats as one meaningful unit. Several coordinated pieces around a king, for example, may be recognized as a pattern rather than as separate objects.
The theory proposes that extensive experience can turn some of these groups into larger long-term memory structures called templates. A template preserves a stable organization while accommodating variable details from the current position. The expert can therefore recognize a general configuration and also register which particular pieces occupy certain squares or perform certain roles.
What the theory does and does not explain
The model helps explain why expert chess memory works especially well for positions containing meaningful chess relationships. It does not claim that experts possess photographic memory or remember an arbitrary arrangement of pieces equally well. Accumulated knowledge provides the structure that makes a position understandable.
Template theory is a scientific account of memory, not a training recipe or a list of positions to memorize. Methods such as the may strengthen recognition through repetition, but they are not the theory itself.
