Arena tournament

An arena tournament is usually defined by a time window rather than a fixed number of rounds. Players finish a game, return to the pairing pool, and receive another opponent while time remains. Because games take different amounts of time, participants do not necessarily play the same number of games.

Standings are based on points accumulated during the arena. However, there is no single universal arena rule set. Each platform can decide how pairings work, which games count, how ties are broken, and whether bonuses exist. Lichess, for example, uses continuous pairings near a player's tournament rank, scoring streaks, and a Berserk option that reduces the player's clock in exchange for the chance to earn an extra point.

This differs from a Swiss system, where everyone advances through numbered rounds, and from a round-robin, where all opponents are predetermined. When reading arena results, always check the specific platform rules.
