FIDE Women's Grand Swiss

FIDE stands for the International Chess Federation. The Women's Grand Swiss, abbreviated WGS, is an official event in the women's world championship cycle. It uses the Swiss system: not every player meets every other player, and one loss does not eliminate anyone. Each round generally pairs players on similar scores while also applying rules about colors and previous opponents.

All players continue for the number of rounds set by that edition. Final standings are based on points scored in the games, with tiebreak rules separating equal totals. Leading finishers can earn places in the Women's Candidates Tournament, which determines the world champion's challenger, although the exact number of qualifying places depends on the cycle's regulations.

The WGS is one large event. It does not work like the FIDE Women's Grand Prix, which combines points from several legs. Nor is it a knockout like the FIDE Women's World Cup: a player who loses in the Grand Swiss still plays the following rounds.
