This game shows how central pressure can become a king attack. Watch the pawn exchanges: they explain why a file opens and why White's bishop eventually becomes more useful than Black's knight.

Explanation

Reykjavík 1972 refers to the World Championship match between American challenger and Soviet champion Boris Spassky. It took place in Reykjavik, Iceland, during the Cold War and attracted extraordinary attention far beyond the usual chess audience. The nickname “Match of the Century” reflected that public significance.

Fischer made a poor start: he lost the first game over the board and forfeited the second amid the dispute over cameras. His 0-2 deficit combined two very different kinds of defeat. Wins in games three and five brought the players to game six with 2.5 points each.

Game six: the first lead

Fischer began with 1.c4 and reached a Queen’s Gambit Declined. Mikhail Tal highlighted the contrast with the three Candidates matches, in which Fischer had always opened with 1.e4. This was not his first 1.c4; Tal also stated that he did not know whether the choice had surprised Spassky.

The win was not simply a matter of opening choice. Fischer restricted Black’s centre and shifted the pressure towards the king, with an active bishop against a limited knight. The attack grew out of the earlier work of restriction and coordination rather than replacing it with an isolated combination. The victory gave him his first lead in the match: 3.5 to 2.5 .

The lead was not yet the title

Spassky still went on to win game eleven. Game six had changed who was chasing whom in the standings, but it had not decided the championship. Fischer ultimately won 12.5 to 8.5 , with the conclusion of game 21, and became the eleventh world champion. That total includes the unplayed second game, decided by forfeit. His victory ended twenty-four years in which Soviet players had held the world title.

The impact also had a measurable dimension beyond the contest itself. The World Chess Hall of Fame records that US Chess membership rose from 30,844 in 1972 to 59,250 in 1973. This indicates the growth of organised chess in the United States around the match, not a worldwide audience figure or a single explanation for the increase.
