Explanation
Tripled pawns are three friendly pawns on the same vertical file. They are rare because several captures toward that file are normally required. They are a more extreme form of .
The front pawn blocks the two behind it, and none can directly defend another because pawns capture diagonally rather than straight ahead. The group may move slowly, present several targets along one line, and use a majority, meaning a numerical pawn advantage in one area, inefficiently.
They are still three pawns, however. They may control many squares on neighboring files, leave other lines open after moving away from their original files, and sometimes advance or exchange effectively. Their value depends on the full , piece activity, and whether the opponent can attack them without allowing threats that demand attention elsewhere.
