Explanation

A pawn breakthrough gives up one or more pawns to clear a path for another. The immediate goal is not material gain but a passed pawn, one with no enemy pawn ahead on the same or an adjacent file that can block it or capture it as it advances.

The classic pattern has three pawns against three. The middle pawn advances first and attacks both sides of the connected enemy pawn group. If the defender captures from one side, the attacker pushes the opposite outside pawn and forces another capture. The remaining pawn is then free to run toward the last rank.

In the used in the example, b6 means that a pawn advances to b6, while cxb6 means that the pawn on the c-file captures on b6.

What must be checked

  • Both possible captures by the defender, not only the most natural reply.
  • Whether the defender can decline the sacrifice and keep the structure closed.
  • The distance of both kings from the pawn that eventually becomes free.
  • The complete after the exchanges, including any promotion with check.

Not every pawn move that attacks another pawn is a winning breakthrough. A general pawn break may merely open a file or alter the structure. A breakthrough in this ending sense requires a forcing sequence that creates a decisive threat, usually an unstoppable passed pawn.

Common confusions

Pawn breakthrough and any pawn attack

A pawn attack may open lines without creating a passed pawn. An endgame breakthrough uses a forcing sequence to produce one.

The sacrifice guarantees success

The idea fails if the defender can decline it, catch the final pawn with the king, or win the promotion race.
