No-show

A no-show means that a player does not appear for a round in which an opponent had been assigned. It describes a circumstance, not a result by itself. The result arises when the arbiter applies the event regulations and the arrival rule.

When the result changes

• Before the default time expires, the player may merely be late and will normally play with less time remaining if the player arrives.
• After the deadline, the arbiter may declare a forfeit loss for the absent player and a win for the opponent, unless the rules or an arbiter's decision provide otherwise.
• If both players are absent, there is no automatic winner. The organizer records the round under the applicable rules, which may allow a double forfeit.

A no-show can also affect later rounds. A player who withdraws is no longer paired, and a player known in advance to be unavailable for a particular round is not paired in that round. Event regulations may require notice confirming continued participation. When the opponent was present and receives the point without play, the result is commonly called a walkover.
