Explanation
The Chebanenko Variation arises in the when Black plays ...a6 before deciding whether to capture on c4 or advance the e-pawn. The move controls b5 and, most importantly, prepares ...b5 to gain queenside space.
... prepares ... without fixing the structure yet
Black adds a flexible preparatory move
Instead of resolving the center immediately, Black prepares queenside expansion.
A typical idea is ...dxc4 followed by ...b5, supporting the advanced pawn and forcing White's pieces to react. But ...a6 also preserves options: Black can play ...e6 and approach a structure, develop the c8-bishop outside the pawn chain, or maintain the central tension. Because the setup can change shape, it is also called the Chameleon Variation.
... gives specific support to the ... plan
The expansion can support the captured pawn
After ...dxc4, ... seeks to form a queenside chain while White prepares a pawn challenge.
