Unicode Chess Symbols block

A Unicode block is a continuous range of numbers assigned to related characters. Each number is a code point, a stable identity used to store and exchange the character. The Chess Symbols block spans U+1FA00 through U+1FA6F.

Its repertoire focuses on chess variants and historical forms: neutral pieces, rotated pieces, symbols combining two piece types, shatranj figures from a predecessor of modern chess, and xiangqi symbols for Chinese chess. Unicode standardizes the characters and their names, but it does not define how those pieces move or the rules of the games.

The twelve familiar king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, and pawn figures are not in this block. They occupy U+2654 through U+265F in Miscellaneous Symbols and are covered as Unicode chess-piece symbols. A character being encoded also does not guarantee that every font can draw it.
