Explanation
The result 1-0 means that White won. The first value belongs to White and the second to Black: 1 identifies the winning side and 0 the losing side.
In Portable Game Notation (PGN), the plain-text format used to store games, 1-0 appears after the moves and in the information field named Result. The zero is the digit 0, not the letter O.
The marker does not explain the cause. The game may have ended because Black's king was attacked with no legal defense, because Black resigned, because Black ran out of time, or because of a tournament official's ruling. Extra information is needed to know what happened. The other basic markers are , , and .
Common confusions
1-0 and O-O
1-0 uses the digits one and zero for a result; uses capital O letters for kingside castling.
