Explanation

The Lisitsyn Gambit arises within the when Black answers 1.Nf3 with 1...f5 and White plays 2.e4. A gambit is a deliberate offer of material, usually a pawn, in return for less tangible benefits such as rapid development, open lines, or pressure against the king.

In , Nf3 means that the knight moves to f3, f5 means that the f-pawn advances to f5, and e4 means that the e-pawn advances to e4. Black's 1...f5 gains kingside space but also moves a pawn that helped shelter that area. White immediately challenges it with 2.e4.

The line begins from the starting position

The board replays every move in the notation maintained by the article, without adding continuations.

If Black accepts with 2...fxe4, White is temporarily a pawn down and must justify the sacrifice by activating pieces and attacking the advanced pawn or Black's king. If Black declines, White may keep a central presence with the pawn on e4. The opening name describes this initial idea, not a compulsory continuation or a guaranteed advantage.
