Calculation

Calculation is the deliberate mental exploration of possible moves before a piece is moved. A variation is a hypothetical sequence in which both sides alternate legal moves. Useful analysis cannot assume the reply you hope to see; it must search for the opponent's best defense or strongest counterattack.

Good calculation does not always mean seeing many moves ahead. It also requires selecting relevant candidate moves, organizing branches, meaning the paths created by alternative replies, keeping the imagined position accurate, and stopping when a sufficiently stable position is reached with no immediate forcing sequence. The player then compares material, the pieces and pawns held by each side, king safety, activity, pawn structure, and threats.

A practical process

1. Identify the opponent's threat and collect the main candidates.
2. Examine forcing moves and the opponent's forcing replies first.
3. Follow one variation at a time, updating which pieces moved, what was captured, and which lines opened.
4. Evaluate the final position of each variation and compare the outcomes.
5. Before playing, perform a blunder check from the opponent's point of view.

Visualization keeps the imagined board accurate, while pattern recognition suggests familiar ideas. Calculation uses both skills but adds concrete verification. A familiar combination may fail because a single piece is on a different square.
