Explanation

The Chigorin Defense belongs to the , a branch in which Black keeps the e5-pawn and both sides develop before resolving the central tension. Its defining move is ...Na5: Black's knight goes from c6 to a5 and normally makes White's bishop retreat from b3 to c2. By leaving c6, the knight frees Black's c7-pawn to advance.

Black usually follows with ...c5 to contest d4 and gain queenside space. The move ...Qc7 then supports the d6-pawn, indirectly reinforces the d6-e5 pawn chain, and supports the c5-pawn from the c-file, which may open after ...cxd4. The queen does not point directly at e5 because Black's own d6-pawn interrupts that diagonal. Black gets understandable counterplay, but the knight on a5 is far from the center. It must find a useful route, often through c6 or b7, before White uses the extra time to improve every piece.

...Na5 and the future ... are connected parts of the plan: first is cleared, then Black challenges the center.
The knight and c-pawn form one plan

The c-pawn cannot advance while the knight remains on . The Chigorin solves that problem with a move that also gains a tempo against the bishop.

White commonly builds the center with d4, develops the b1-knight toward d2, and prepares maneuvers against Black's king. Black focuses on central and queenside pressure. The struggle is less immediate than a gambit, but the two sides often operate on different parts of the board, so a slow-looking maneuver can become important several moves later.

Usage and context

Mikhail Chigorin refined the variation, and it served for decades as one of Black's principal defenses in the Ruy Lopez.
