Closed position

A closed position arises when several pawns, especially in the center, face one another and cannot advance. This blockage leaves few clear files and diagonals. Pieces cannot switch quickly from one side of the board to the other, so play usually depends less on immediate action and more on preparing favorable changes.

Typical play involves improving the pieces, gaining space on one wing, and preparing a pawn break. A pawn break is a pawn advance intended to force an exchange or open lines. The pawn chain, a group of pawns protecting one another diagonally, often indicates where to play and which pawn can become the foundation of a plan.

Knights often find more opportunities than bishops because they can jump over the blockage, but this is not an automatic rule. A bishop outside its own pawn chain or working on an open diagonal can be excellent.
