Explanation

The Open Ruy Lopez begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Nxe4. Black's knight captures the e4-pawn before Black plays ...Be7. This decision gains a temporary pawn and allows the center to open quickly.

White normally answers 6.d4. The pawn attacks e5 and frees lines for the c1-bishop and queen. Black's knight on e4 is active but can also become a target. Black must support the activity with development and counterplay, meaning threats that prevent White from attacking without resistance.

In a main line, ...b5 drives the white bishop back and ...d5 builds a strong black center. White tries to exploit the exposed knight and a lead in development. The captured pawn is not a permanent gift: trying to keep it without coordinating the pieces can leave Black under pressure.

5...Nxe4 wins a temporary pawn and prompts White to open the center before Black can consolidate.
Black can resolve the tension immediately

The -knight already attacks . Capturing that pawn chooses a more concrete struggle than 5...Be7.

Open describes the early movement or exchange of central pawns, which frees files and diagonals. It does not mean that every piece has a clear line or that the game must become a direct king attack. The positions are often concrete and tactical because the center changes before both sides finish development.

The chooses 5...Be7 and preserves the tension, while the plays ...Nf6 one move earlier without inserting ...a6 and Ba4. Both may contain ...Nxe4, but their move orders and resulting structures differ.

Common confusions

Open Ruy Lopez and an open game

Open Ruy Lopez is the proper name of the line with 5...Nxe4. An open game is the broader category of openings beginning 1.e4 e5.

Taking e4 wins a pawn

5...Nxe4 takes a pawn, but White gains time to open the center and attack the knight. The balance depends on the continuation, not the material count at that moment.
