Outside passed pawn

An outside passed pawn is a passed pawn located far from the main group of pawns that still matters, usually on the opposite side of the board. No enemy pawn stands between it and the last rank on its own vertical file or either neighboring file.

Its main value is often deflection. The opponent must send the king or a piece to prevent it from reaching the last rank and becoming another piece. While that defender moves away, the other king may enter and capture pawns on the opposite side. The outside passer can win the game even if it is eventually captured because it has created time and distance.

Outside is a relationship to the rest of the pawn structure, not the name of a particular file. The pawn need not stand on the a-file or h-file, and an edge pawn is not outside if it remains beside the main group. It is not unstoppable either: a piece may blockade it, attack it from behind, or win the pawn race to the last rank.
