Explanation

A resource is a useful possibility contained in the position. It may stop a threat, create a threat, force a draw, gain time, or reach a defensible position with few pieces. When commentary says that a player found a resource, it usually points to an idea that was not obvious at first.

A resource can be tactical or strategic. A tactic is a concrete, usually short sequence based on checks, captures, or direct threats. A strategic resource changes longer-term conditions, such as giving up a pawn to activate the pieces or using to reach a defensible position.

How to search for one

  1. Identify the opponent's exact threat and what happens if it is ignored.
  2. Check your own checks, captures, and threats first because they force a response.
  3. Consider material changes, counterattacks, sacrifices, meaning the voluntary surrender of a pawn or piece, and transitions to different positions.
  4. Compare the idea with the opponent's , the set of connected actions serving a goal, and test whether the resource truly disrupts it.

A resource does not have to be the only move, and it does not have to be defensive. It can also accelerate an attack or improve a , the process of turning an advantage into a result. Its value comes from working against correct replies, not merely from looking surprising.

Common confusions

Resource and swindle

A correct resource can objectively change the result. A strict swindle creates difficulty but still fails against the precise reply.
