Explanation

To read c6 in , take c as the column and six as the row. The Bird Variation appears when Black moves the c6-knight a second time and places it on d4. From that central square, the knight attacks White’s bishop on b5 and forces White to decide whether to retreat it, exchange the knight, or change the central tension.

The knight on d4 is active and reaches several squares in White’s position, but the plan has a cost: Black spends another move on a piece that had already left its starting square while the rest of the army remains at home. If White exchanges the knight and Black recaptures with the e-pawn, Black may obtain an advanced pawn on d4. That pawn gains space, meaning it controls more territory, but it can also become a target.

White does not need an immediate refutation. White can bring the remaining pieces into play, challenge the knight or central pawn, and use the fact that Black still has to organize the king. Black hopes the early activity on d4 compensates for the extra time spent with the same knight.
