Explanation

A backward pawn has fallen behind friendly pawns on neighboring files and cannot advance safely because an enemy pawn controls the square directly in front of it. Since pawns cannot move backward, the neighboring pawns that have already advanced cannot return to protect it.

The problem extends beyond the pawn itself. The square in front often becomes a stable post for an enemy piece because no friendly pawn can drive that piece away. The pawn may also face repeated pressure from rooks or the queen, especially when the opponent has no pawn on that file and can use the open line to attack it.

Not every less-advanced pawn is backward. If it can advance safely, if a neighboring pawn can still support it, or if the opponent cannot exploit it, the label is inaccurate or has little practical importance. It is therefore often a kind of , although active pieces or a freeing advance may compensate for it.
