Explanation
Connected passed pawns are two or more friendly pawns on neighboring vertical files. Each is passed: no enemy pawn stands between it and the last rank on its own file or either neighboring file. Their proximity lets them advance as a team toward that rank, where a pawn can become another piece.
When one pawn is a square farther forward, the rear pawn may protect it diagonally. If both are level, they do not yet defend each other, but either may advance and create that relationship. The opponent must watch more than one route to the last rank, which can force a piece to blockade the pawns or even be sacrificed for them.
Coordination still matters. A rushed push may separate the pawns, allow one blockade to contain them, or expose the rear pawn. Their strength depends on promotion distance, whose turn it is, support from kings and pieces, and whether the opponent can attack from behind or from the side.
Common confusions
Connected passers and a protected passer
Connected passed pawns must all be passed and occupy neighboring files. A only needs another pawn to defend it; that supporting pawn may not be passed.
