Rook on the seventh rank

A rook on the seventh rank has penetrated to the rank directly in front of the opponent's home rank. For White this is the board's seventh rank; for Black the equivalent invasion is on the second rank. The traditional name is stated from White's perspective.

From there, the rook may attack several unadvanced pawns sideways, give checks, and confine the enemy king near its back rank. Its strength comes from creating several threats along one line. Two coordinated rooks on that rank can make the pressure much greater.

The placement is not automatically strong. The rook needs escape squares, enough support, and genuine targets. An unsupported rook may be trapped or driven away. In a rook versus pawn ending, concrete activity and king placement matter more than occupying a rank by rule.
