Potential and risks

  • The pawns can advance in turns to preserve support and create a , one with no enemy pawns ahead on its own file or either adjacent file.
  • If an enemy piece stands in front and stops their advance, they may lose mobility and become targets.
  • Because they do not defend each other while level, they may need piece support before advancing.

Every duo is a case of , but not all connected pawns make a duo. Connected only requires neighboring files; a duo additionally requires both pawns to stand on the same rank.
