Explanation
Progressive score (PS) is calculated by looking at a player's cumulative tournament score after each round and adding all those values. If the cumulative scores after four rounds are 1, 2, 2.5, and 3.5, the PS is 9.
This indirectly gives more weight to points scored early, because those points remain inside the cumulative total for more later rounds. Two players can both finish with 5 points but have different PS values if one reached a high score earlier while the other caught up near the end.
Unlike , progressive score does not depend on opponents' final scores. It uses only the development of the participant's own score. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) also defines Progressive Score Cut-1, a variation that excludes the score achieved after the first round.
Common confusions
Progressive score vs. final score
Final score counts the tournament total once at the end. Progressive score adds the total the player had after every round.
