Queen and pawn versus queen ending

The queen and pawn versus queen ending contains both kings, one queen for each side, and a single pawn. It is one of the most delicate five-piece endings. The extra pawn may win, but the defending queen can check from many directions and often has enough resources to force a draw.

The attacker tries to bring the pawn toward promotion without exposing the king. Progress often requires coordination between king and queen, shelter from checks, and moments when a promotion threat forces the defender to stop checking. A cross-check is a reply that answers a check while also checking the opposing king. It can interrupt the opponent's checking sequence, create a threat against that king, and make a pawn advance possible.

Resources for both sides

• The attacker seeks king shelter, protection for the pawn, and a favorable queen exchange.
• The defender seeks repeated checks, attacks on the pawn, and exchanges that lead to a draw.
• After a queen trade, the king-and-pawn ending must be assessed. Reaching a key square, a square from which the king can force promotion, may decide it.
• The pawn's vertical column and both king positions matter more than the pawn's distance from promotion alone.

With only five pieces, every legal position can be checked in an endgame tablebase, a precomputed database that stores the result under perfect play. A tablebase gives the exact result, but practical play still requires understanding shelter, checks, and transitions.
