Board vision

Board vision means reading the position as it stands now. It includes noticing attacks, defenders, rows, columns, or diagonals available to a rook, bishop, or queen, unprotected pieces, and exposed kings. It does not yet search through future sequences; it first establishes what is true on the current board.

This skill prevents errors that can look like calculation failures but begin earlier. If a distant bishop attacking a piece goes unnoticed, every later analysis starts from a false picture. Visualization moves pieces in the mind; board vision supplies the initial position that must be updated.

A practical scan

After the opponent moves, first inspect checks and direct attacks against your king. Then look for available captures, undefended pieces, and rows, columns, or diagonals opened or closed by the last move. A scan for checks, captures, and immediate threats helps organize this view, while a blunder check repeats it on the position that would exist after your intended move.
