Match Points or Game Points

A team event can keep two different totals. Match points are awarded for the overall result between two teams, such as a team win, draw, or loss. Game points are the sum of the individual board results scored by the team's players.

A tie-break is a rule used to order teams that finish on the same score. The Match Points or Game Points tie-break, abbreviated MPvGP, uses the secondary total. When the main standings are decided by game points, it compares match points. When the main standings are decided by match points, it compares game points.

The criterion does not blend the two totals or convert one into the other. It simply uses information that the primary scoring system left in the background. Like every FIDE tie-break, under the International Chess Federation, it must be part of the ordered list published for the event before it is applied.
