Team chess and a long women's tradition

The HSG competed in the DDR-Sonderliga, DDR-Oberliga and DDR-Liga during the 1960s and 1970s. It won the East German team cup in 1974, with Eveline Nünchert as the only woman on the Potsdam side.

A women's team had been formed in 1968, reaching the DDR-Liga in 1969 and the DDR-Oberliga in 1970. Competing as HSG PH/Empor Potsdam and HSG PH Potsdam, it also won the East German Women's Team Blitz Championship in 1974 and 1975.

Eveline Nünchert gives that women's tradition an unusually long personal thread. She was among the Potsdam winners in 1974 and 1975, then scored 12 points from 12 games on board one when USV won the German women's team blitz title in 2012.

Rebuilding after reunification

The upheaval after 1989 had tangible costs. During clearances, the section lost its playing venue and most of its historical books, magazines, trophies and documents.

School-based youth work also collapsed at first, and the section had only 27 members in 1992. By its 2009 anniversary it had recovered to 75, including 27 pupils and young people; younger members therefore made up more than a third of the membership.

The university remains an important institutional setting, but not an admission barrier: Universitätssportverein Potsdam is open to residents without a university affiliation. Its chess department provides in-person training for children, young people and adults, alongside internal tournaments and team matches.

Youth chess with repeated national appearances

The youth program is visible in repeated participation, not only in one title. USV Potsdam appeared at the German U10 Club Championship in 2022, 2023 and 2024, three consecutive editions of a national team final.

In 2026, Alfred Nemitz won the German U16 Individual Championship for USV Potsdam with 7.5 points. Together, these results show two levels of youth chess: recurring U10 team participation and an individual U16 title.

The Sommerblitz as local memory

A smaller format also carries part of the club's local identity. According to its chronology, the USV-Sommerblitzturnier began in 1993 and reached its 17th edition in 2009; it was held again in 2024.

The event links a long institutional history to a recurring face-to-face gathering rather than to league competition alone.
