From Schöneberg to Lietzensee
SC Weisse Dame was founded on 13 November 1951 as Schach-Club WEISSE DAME mit Sitz in Berlin-Schöneberg. The precise name and date place its origin in Berlin's early post-war period, although the club's later story moved to another part of the city.
From March 1997 the club used the Nachbarschaftshaus am Lietzensee in Charlottenburg. Its closure at the end of 2017 forced a temporary move to Wilmersdorf during renovation.
In 2026 the Berliner Schachverband again listed adult activity and several children and youth groups in Charlottenburg.
Open tournaments as a public face
The Weisse-Dame-Open began as an open individual tournament in 1977 and reached its 39th edition in 2017. That long-running series repeatedly brought players from outside the membership into the club's competitive life.
The renovation period showed that the club's outward-facing tournament culture did not depend on one event. The Open could not be held in 2018 because the temporary room was smaller.
The club expected Freitag den 13. to continue, while the monthly open blitz and rapid events carried on at the temporary venue. In 2026 Freitag der 13. was again held as an open rapid tournament at Haus am Lietzensee.
The Westpokal represents the whole club
The Westpokal offers a different expression of club community. Four friendly clubs from north-west Berlin have met in the competition since 1981, and it returned in 2023 after a three-year break.
Its unwritten rule is that a lineup should reflect the club's cross-section rather than simply field its ten strongest players.
Weisse Dame became the record winner with its twelfth victory in 2023. More revealing than the total is the team ideal behind it: serious competition combined with a selection that keeps different levels of the club visible.
Youth training with a focus on girls
Youth work is organized across several groups and, according to its public Schach.in profile, led by licensed and experienced coaches. The club explicitly identifies girls' chess as a focus, while also providing adult training built around changing subjects.
That focus has reached national finals. The under-12 girls were German club runners-up in 2022, the under-16 girls finished third the same year, and the under-12 team took another third place in 2023.
