A Munich line older than the department
The story begins before the department itself. The German Chess Federation dates Schachklub Anderssen-Bavaria München to 1908, while the present section was formed in 1980 when Anderssen Bavaria was integrated into FC Bayern München e.V.
Within FC Bayern's multisport structure, chess operates as its own sport section with a dedicated competition, tournament and training program. The result is a participant-facing Munich club community, not simply another use of the football badge.
A championship era compressed into thirteen years
Between 1983 and 1995, FC Bayern won nine German team championships. Five came consecutively from 1989 through 1993, concentrating the section's national prominence into an unusually short period.
The international summit was the 1992 European Club Cup. It arrived during the same run as the domestic titles, making the European success part of a sustained peak rather than an isolated tournament result.
A long-standing base in Giesing
The famous badge also had a durable Munich base. From 1992, the Anton-Fingerle-Bildungszentrum in Giesing served as the venue for most team matches and for several recurring section tournaments.
Open play and a pathway for young players
The participant program is broader than the championship story. It includes open events in several time controls, training and lectures, while guests are admitted to all tournaments and almost every other event; team play is offered across the full range of playing strength.
Youth work links school chess with age- and level-based training, tournaments and a route into team competition. The annual FCB Kids & Teens Cup and training sessions at the FC Bayern Campus place the chess section inside the shared physical infrastructure of the wider club.
