Hilgert and the rise
Wilfried Hilgert joined SG Porz in 1956. The club's memorial account identifies that moment as the start of its rise: Porz entered the Oberliga, then Germany's highest league, in 1962 and began appearing in the national team championship finals in 1964.
Porz won its first German team title in 1967 with Robert Hübner on top board. Hilgert brought Viktor Korchnoi to the club in 1977; Vlastimil Hort joined in 1979, the year Porz captured its second championship.
A national champion reaches Europe
The 1979 title qualified Porz for the European Cup. In March 1981, the team beat Kyiv 6.5-5.5 in the round of 16, adding a European chapter to a history otherwise dominated by German leagues and cups.
The Deutscher Schachbund records ten German team championships for Porz between 1967 and 2004. The club also won ten national team cups between 1983 and 2013; the 2011 and 2013 cup victories came after the first team's 2007 Bundesliga withdrawal.
The 2007 break
In May 2007, Porz withdrew its first team from the Bundesliga even though the side had finished third in the previous season. The club chair told ChessBase that Hilgert had ended support for the elite team because he opposed the league's move into the independently organized Bundesliga e.V.
The same report said Hilgert intended to keep backing the club and its teams from the second tier downward. The decision therefore ended the top-division chapter, not SG Porz as an in-person competitive community.
Youth chess after the Bundesliga withdrawal
The club obituary also emphasizes Hilgert's role in youth chess. It says he financially supported the section's long-term development and kept asking about beginners and the youngest members.
Today's training pathway runs from first steps to players with world or European youth championship experience, and most groups use the Stappen method. That gives the section a single framework for both access and advanced development.
At the 2023 German club youth championships, Porz won both the U20 and girls' U16 titles without losing a team match. It won the U20 title again in 2024.
Remembering Hilgert through open play
The first Porzer Schnellschach-Open drew almost 100 participants in 2016. From its second edition in 2018, the event was staged as the Wilfried-Hilgert-Gedenkturnier.
The planned 2020 edition was cancelled during the pandemic, and the open returned in 2023. Hilgert's name is therefore attached not only to past championship teams but also to a participant-facing tournament in the club's later history.
