A long local line, reshaped in 1996
The German Chess Federation dates the Solingen club line to 1868. The present organization was formed in 1996 when Solinger Schachgesellschaft 1868 e.V. merged with Schachverein Aljechin Solingen e.V.
The merged club first competed as Schachgesellschaft 1868-Aljechin Solingen e.V. and adopted the present name in 2009. That sequence explains why championship records attach several names to the same Solingen line.
When a European cup began in Solingen
The idea for a European competition between clubs is itself connected to Solingen. Egon Evertz, then chairman of SG Solingen, proposed a European Club Cup, and the club hosted the final of the first edition in 1975/76.
The contest with Burevestnik Moscow remained level after the two legs and a playoff, so both clubs were declared winners. In 1990, Solingen shared the cup again, this time with CSKA Moscow after three 3-3 matches in Solingen.
A permanent place at Germany's top table
When Germany created a single nationwide chess Bundesliga in 1980, Solingen was part of its first season. It has remained in the top division without interruption ever since.
Across that long span, the Solingen line won twelve German team championships, from its first title in 1969 to its twelfth in 2016. The 2016 victory ended OSG Baden-Baden's run of ten consecutive titles and showed success across eras rather than within one generation.
The club beneath the elite team
A broad local structure sits beneath the Bundesliga team. The club fields teams at several levels, welcomes guests for casual play and tournaments, and runs youth training groups, youth teams and school chess groups across Solingen.
That connection gained a visible home in 2009 with the opening of Schachzentrum Solingen. Former world champion Boris Spassky and Artur Jussupow attended the celebration, bringing two names from international elite chess into a local club occasion.
