A deliberate competitive reset

At its 60th anniversary in 1991, the club placed greater emphasis on performance chess while keeping its social side. The first team reached the 1.

Schachbundesliga in 2004, Germany's highest national league for club teams.

A major sporting high point came with second-place finishes behind OSG Baden-Baden in both 2012/13 and 2013/14. By then, a locally rooted club had become a national title challenger.

A clubhouse built by its members

The competitive project acquired a physical base before the top-flight breakthrough. For the 2002/03 season, members converted former changing rooms at the Südbad into a dedicated chess center, contributing nearly 5,000 hours of work.

The center now contains four rooms across more than 200 square meters and can stage Bundesliga-level matches. It also accommodates social chess, tournament play and youth training, keeping very different levels of participation under one roof.

Chess in schools, galleries and city arenas

Youth work extended well beyond the clubhouse. By 2012, a joint project with Mülheimer Sportbund covered ten primary schools; the city described a multi-year network of school chess groups in 2014, and the club received the DSJ quality seal for children and youth chess in 2026.

The club also carried chess into the Kunstmuseum Mülheim. The Schach - Kunst - Spiel partnership launched in 2010 and led to a 2011 exhibition in which visual art and Bundesliga matches shared the same institution.

Later in 2011, the club also organized the Bundesliga's first centralized gathering of every team in Mülheim. Elite chess appeared in the city in two distinct public forms that year: inside the Kunstmuseum and in a single round that brought the entire league together.
