A club founded in a local inn
The club was founded on 18 March 1928 at the Johann Schorr inn, following an initiative by Fritz Schäfer and Peter Schirra. Its original founding document still survives according to the club, giving the early story a physical record rather than only a retrospective account.
Stopping and starting again
All playing activity ceased in 1940. The group resumed in 1946 inside the Sport- und Spielvereinigung, then left that umbrella on 29 July 1951 to establish an independent chess club again.
Building a youth pathway
A systematic youth program took shape in the late 1960s after Hermann Rech qualified as a C-level coach. Eppelborn entered its first youth team in 1967, while outings, barbecues and camps added a social dimension to the training.
Later milestones reached beyond local competition. A U12 team played in the 2008 German Youth Club Championship, and the U14 team won the Saarland championship in 2024.
A room made by the members
Members renovated the club room themselves. It functions as a shared place for adult play, youth beginners and more advanced young players.
A New Year rapid with a broad field
The tournament now known as Schach den 3 Königen began in 1997. The Deutscher Schachbund describes it as a traditional Saarland rapid event, marking its development from a club initiative into a recurring regional meeting point.
The 2024 edition brought together 119 players from Saarland and neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate, including four FIDE Masters and eight unaffiliated entrants. Rating prizes and separate prizes for women, youth players, seniors and the best unaffiliated player distributed recognition beyond the leading boards.
