A modern club under a historic name
Schachgemeinschaft Leipzig took its present form on 1 April 2011, when SC Leipzig-Gohlis and SV Lok Leipzig-Mitte merged. The new organization chose the name of an earlier Schachgemeinschaft Leipzig, described by the German Chess Federation as East Germany's most successful club before it was dissolved after reunification.
The name recalls a major Leipzig tradition, while the present organization begins with the 2011 merger.
One strand brought into the merger was Gohlis's approach to youth teaching. Paul Gaffron created a graded system of thousands of tactical Knobelaufgaben and used it for decades in school chess and club training.
He continued working with Leipzig juniors after the merger.
From school groups to youth teams
SGL organizes adult, women's and multiple youth teams, while members also lead chess groups in schools across Leipzig and the surrounding area. Together, these activities create a documented route from regular school-based instruction to organized team play.
Building a place of its own
The push for a dedicated home began with a practical strain. After RB Leipzig reached the Bundesliga, the chess club was increasingly displaced from the Sportforum or lost dates altogether, with youth work particularly affected according to the club.
A public call for help with the project began on 11 February 2016, and the Denksportzentrum opened on 25 August 2023.
The roughly 300-square-meter center hosts team matches, junior training, club evenings and open tournaments. Its open day also brought chess, Go and bridge into the same building.
The purpose-built venue combines several forms of mind sport with regular club use.
A wider range of tournament play
Having a home of its own allowed SGL to expand the events it stages. The program includes the SGL-Open, a rapid-chess series and the Uwe-Attig-Silvesterblitz.
Solving tournaments for chess compositions add a different discipline, centered on finding a composed solution rather than playing a complete game.
