Chess inside the Lok tradition
The chess section sits within a multisport club founded in 1949 as BSG Lokomotive Meiningen. Its sponsoring institution was the Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk, the railway repair works now known as the Dampflokwerk.
Lok therefore refers to a specific part of the city's industrial history rather than functioning only as a sporting nickname.
ESV Lok Meiningen retains its own identity in organized chess and fielded two teams in 2025/26. Meiningen has also had a second separately registered club, SK Theaterstadt Meiningen, since 2023.
The two organizations therefore represent distinct strands of chess life in the city.
A tournament in the life of the city
The club archive records the Meininger Schnellschachturnier from the early 2000s, and the series reached its 26th edition in 2026. Entry was explicitly open to people without club membership, giving the event a wider public role than an ordinary league fixture.
Several editions were tied to Meiningen's city festival and later the Töpfemarktfest, with the mayor's cup providing a civic frame. The event also carried state-level significance: in 2011 and 2026 it doubled as the Thuringian individual rapid championship.
Youth routes to national events
In 2007, persistent youth work was credited with enabling ESV Lok to enter three teams for the first time. Four years later, a Meiningen under-16 side competed in the German Club Championship organized by Deutsche Schachjugend.
Individual players later reached the same national age-group stage. Richard Scheftlein appeared in the German Under-16 Individual Championship in 2014, and Gregor Göpfert represented the club there in 2024, two examples separated by a decade.
