An early precedent for women’s participation

In the 1980s, the club entered an all-women team in the Cádiz Provincial Championship. San Fernando City Council later recalled it as the first complete women’s lineup submitted by a club in that competition.

That precedent resurfaced in 2018 through the first Bahía de Cádiz Women’s Chess Open. The event carried the earlier milestone into a public activity explicitly designed to make girls and women more visible and increase their participation.

The Open de la Sal and the struggle for a home

The Open Internacional Ciudad de San Fernando, known as the Open de la Sal, was one of PAI’s longest-running public projects. In 2015, the club announced its first interruption after twenty-five years, bringing a long initial phase to a close.

The need to preserve a physical home became explicit in 2022, when the club staged a tournament to cover rent and prevent its premises from closing. The activity continued: in 2026, the same venue was hosting in-person training for beginner and competitive players as well as tournaments.

A young generation that reached the title

PAI won its first Andalusian Honor Division title in 2021 with a team that combined players aged fourteen to eighteen with International Master Roberto Gómez Ledo. A second title in 2026 extended a competitive era that had first reached the top with an exceptionally young lineup.
