A founding date without a seamless myth
Peña Ajedrecística Oromana was founded in Alcalá de Guadaíra in 1954, with Manuel Ramos Vallejo as its first president. The club's own chronology separates that original foundation from the organization that later re-emerged.
Oromana was inactive from 1959 to 1972. During the gap, organized chess in Alcalá shifted to the Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos Salesianos, which kept competitions running while the peña itself lay dormant.
A city tradition that outlived the interruption
The Salesian alumni period produced the Torneo Interciudades in 1965 and the Semana Ajedrecística Alcalareña in 1971. The latter began as a circuit of rapid tournaments, simultaneous displays and related activities, so a public chess tradition was already in place before Oromana was formally revived.
Members of the Salesian alumni association resumed the Oromana project in 1972. The Semana Ajedrecística reached its 40th edition in 2012, while the Open Ciudad de Alcalá reached its 46th in 2025 with Oromana among the organizers.
A staged route into competition
Oromana's training plan is divided into five levels. It starts with complete beginners and introduces federation membership and official tournaments at Level 3, turning instruction into a pathway toward competitive play.
Teaching also extends beyond the club room. In 2026, Oromana led an in-person youth workshop at Alcalá's Casa de la Juventud, a recent example of work in a municipal setting.
From local rebuilding to the national top tier
The 1970s reorganization quickly had a competitive consequence: Oromana first reached Spain's national Second Division in 1975-76. That promotion ties the club's sporting rise directly to its institutional revival.
In 2025, its leading team played in the top-tier CECLUB División de Honor under a sponsored competition name. The appearance extended, at a different scale, a national trajectory that had begun with the 1975-76 promotion.
