Caja Insular and the 1967 foundation
The club was founded in 1967 as Club de Ajedrez Caja Insular de Ahorros de Canarias, the same year Ángel Fernández won the Spanish individual championship. He was recorded as member number one of the new organization.
The institutional relationship also dates to 1967 and remains visible in the present name. Fundación La Caja de Canarias continues its association with the club, linking the Caja Insular organization to the present-day institution.
A cycle of national championships
The first Spanish national team championship came in Barcelona in 1973. Titles followed in 1976, 1977, and 1978, before returns to first place in 1988 and 1990 brought the total to six.
Bent Larsen played for the 1976 championship team. His connection to the club's wider chess culture extended beyond competition, as he also contributed to Revista Ajedrez Canario as technical director of international coverage.
A magazine that documented the boom
Revista Ajedrez Canario was published from April 1971 to April 1976, overlapping with the start of the club's national championship cycle. Pedro Lezcano Montalvo's introductory chess primer reached seven editions.
The club now keeps both strands of that legacy accessible through a digitized collection.
Classrooms, clubhouse, and Calle Triana
The academy includes in-person instruction from age six, learning opportunities for adults and older people, and work in schools. That breadth places the transmission of the game alongside the competitive tradition.
The community also reaches beyond formal lessons. The club opens its premises to nonmembers and brings boards and workshops to Calle Mayor de Triana, placing chess in the public life of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
