From a district name to a city name
The organization was founded in 1952 as Club de Ajedrez Cruz de Barberá for players in Creu de Barberà, then part of the municipality of Barberà. When the district was incorporated into Sabadell in 1957, a change on the municipal map became part of the club's own identity story.
Its first period ended in early 1964, but former players and local enthusiasts resumed activity later that year and formalized it as Club de Ajedrez Cruz. Once the club was again based within Barberà, a general meeting approved the name Club de Ajedrez Barberà.
A school pathway into team chess
School championships run from 1970 to 1974 involved nearly 300 players. Some participants joined the club, and for several years an entire third team consisted of schoolchildren, creating an early route from introduction to league play that survives in the club school's mix of theory and practice.
Continuity and adaptation in the Open
The Open Internacional reached 42 editions from 1979 through 2019 and had been internationalized in 1993. In 2020, the club staged an in-person invitational under COVID-19 safety protocols alongside an online amateur event.
The city council identified the 2026 tournament as the Open's 48th edition.
Competitive milestones and broader participation
Winning the Spanish club Second Division in 2017 returned Barberà to the national First Division, while 2022 brought its first title in the top Catalan league. The two achievements mark national and Catalan peaks within a competitive history built over many decades.
The club's third women's team event in 2025 was staged within the local Women's Day program. The Catalan federation counted 44 teams and 138 players, described that participation as a national record and highlighted a field ranging from first-time competitors to Catalan champions.
