Chess before the revival
Societat Coral Colon was founded in 1896 in La Creu Alta and is popularly known as the Casinet de la Creu Alta. Chess arrived long before the current competitive era: the institution had a documented section in the 1940s and began organizing the Copa Pedro Balsach annually in 1952.
Club d’Escacs Sabadell became part of Societat Coral Colon in 1976. The official presentation on 1 April 2005 is therefore best understood as the revival of an internal tradition, not the first appearance of chess at the Casinet.
Friday nights as a meeting point
The 2005 presentation coincided with the institution’s first Obert d’Escacs. Friday-night rounds became a defining feature, and the 2026 edition kept that rhythm over eight in-person rounds.
Public-facing activity extends beyond the rated open. Societat Coral Colon has staged a Festa Major rapid tournament for federated and non-federated residents, and in 2026 it delivered basic sessions at Biblioteca de Ponent for adults and children from age six.
A school inside an elite team
The section won its first Lliga Catalana title in 2010 and won the competition again in 2025. Competitive growth did not remain separate from teaching: in the 2023 championship team, the club itself identified four players developed through its Escola d’Escacs.
